Widow's Bay won 14 Emmys from 19 nominations, Hacks two from 24

Hacks went into Monday night with 24 Emmy nominations, the most any comedy season has ever collected. It won two.

Widow's Bay went in with 19 and won 14. That is a conversion rate of 73.7 per cent against the 16.3 per cent that The Pitt and Hacks managed between them, and it is the arithmetic the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards actually turned on.

We led our preview on the nomination count, because everyone did: 49 nominations across two HBO Max shows was the number in every write-up of the morning of 8 July. Those 49 nominations produced eight Emmys.

The sums

The Television Academy publishes wins per show, which makes this checkable rather than impressionistic.

The Pitt converted six of 25, or 24 per cent. Hacks converted two of 24, or 8.3 per cent. Widow's Bay converted 14 of 19. Katie Dippold's first-season horror comedy therefore won six more Emmys than the two front-runners combined, from thirty fewer nominations.

Be precise about what the 14 contains, because the outlets are not. Six came on the telecast: comedy series, lead actor, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The other eight came at the Creative Arts ceremony, for guest actress, casting, cinematography, production design, music composition, music supervision, sound editing and sound mixing. TVLine reported the show's total as six, counting only Monday. The Television Academy's own record says 14, and so does the record claim, which would not stand up on the smaller figure.

That record: most Emmys won by a comedy series in a single year. It had belonged to The Studio, which won 13 last year. It lasted one ceremony.

Three years of the same result

Line the comedy field up by year and a pattern appears that the nomination coverage keeps missing.

In 2024 The Bear set the comedy nominations record with 23. In 2025 The Studio matched that 23 in its first season and converted 13 of them. This year Hacks broke the record with 24 in its fifth and final season, and won two, while Widow's Bay did in its first season what The Studio had done in its first season, only more so.

Three years, and each time the trophies have gone to a comedy the Academy had not voted on before. A nomination is the whole membership saying a show is good. A win is a branch of specialists choosing between shows, and specialists reward the thing they have not already rewarded four times.

Hacks is the clean test of that, because nothing about the show got worse. It ended with the best reviews it had ever had and the most nominations any comedy has ever received. Voters gave Jean Smart her award and gave the rest to the newcomer.

Jean Smart, and the one that is not a consolation

Smart's win is the fifth she has taken for Hacks, which means she has won the category for every season the show ran. TVLine notes that Julia Louis-Dreyfus did not manage that with Veep, despite winning six times for it.

That is rarer than a bigger career total. It is also the only thing Hacks has left, since the other win was picture editing for the finale.

Matthew Rhys, and a record two outlets have described differently

Rhys won lead actor in a comedy for Widow's Bay and lead actor in a limited series for The Beast in Me, on the same night. That part is not disputed: Variety has him as the first person to take two lead acting Emmys in one evening.

The second claim needs care. Rhys won lead actor in a drama in 2018 for The Americans, so he now holds all three lead acting Emmys. TV Guide called him the first person ever to complete the set. Variety called him the first man, and Variety is right: Goldderby records Barbara Stanwyck completing all three lead actress categories between 1961 and 1983. The distinction is not pedantry. The version without the qualifier writes a woman out of a record she set 43 years earlier.

What HBO Max actually had

The Pitt retained outstanding drama series and Noah Wyle retained lead actor, which is the harder half of a repeat and worth more than the tally suggests. Its other four wins were guest actor for Ernest Harden Jr., casting, prosthetic makeup, and original music and lyrics.

The drama categories scattered in a way the drama race rarely does. Rhea Seehorn took lead actress for Pluribus, Vince Gilligan took the writing for it, Tom Pelphrey won supporting actor for Task, Allison Janney supporting actress for The Diplomat, and Saul Metzstein the directing for Slow Horses. Five different programmes, none of them the one that won the series award.

By network, Apple TV finished on 28 and HBO Max on 21. Half of Apple's total came from one show.

The thing to watch next

Nominations are a poor guide to what a voting body will do with them, in the same way that a standing ovation is a poor guide to what a jury will do. Both measure enthusiasm at the moment of counting. Neither measures the choice between one thing and another, which is what an award is.

Which makes next year the interesting one. Widow's Bay was renewed for a second season in June, before the season one finale aired on 17 June, and Dippold signed an overall deal with Apple at the same time. On the three-year pattern above, a second season is precisely when a comedy starts collecting nominations instead of statuettes.

Hacks has finished, so its 24 stands as the nominations record until something beats it. The 79th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations are announced next July.
